A Common Thread with Alice Edwards of Memo Press

We love nothing better than gathering together inspiring women and sharing their stories to inspire even more of us. We are thrilled to introduce 'A Common Thread', where we talk to fellow female firecrackers about the missions that drive us and the passions that bind us - be they guilty pleasures, business ambitions or late night chocolate.

  1. Let’s set the scene: please introduce yourself in one sentence

I’m Alice Edwards, founder of Memo Press, a bespoke stationery company specialising in both note cards personalised by hand alongside watercolour illustrated cards, and wrapping paper. Before I started Memo Press I was the jewellery editor of Sunday Times Style & Times Luxx magazines.

 

  1. If you were to choose one female icon, dead or alive, who would you choose and why?

I think I spent an entire day contemplating this question but ultimately it would have to be Katherine Hepburn. Aside from acting in some of my all time favourite films (the Philadelphia Story, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner?) and being unreasonably elegant, she seemed to have this incredible confidence and authenticity all during a time when women were really weren’t meant to.

 

  1. What’s your favourite colour in your wardrobe?

Is it awful it I say brown? In the summer it’s white but when the days get shorter I love layers and keep coming back combinations of rich chocolate.

  

  1. What passion drives you?

I love the idea of making something small, truly special. In a world where it’s so easy to buy something disposable and transient, taking the time to write a thoughtful birthday card or wrap a very modest gift beautifully feels like true luxury to me. I really wanted to make stationery that embodied that idea.

 

  1. Your most recent Insta or Etsy discovery?

I’m obsessed with art restoration accounts on Instagram, they’re wildly satisfying to watch.

 

  1. Best podcast you have listened to in the past 6 months?

I always come back to Guy Ray “How I built this” for a dose of inspiration. No two stories have ever been the same which I love.

  

  1. If you could invite any 3 women - dead or alive - to drinks who would you invite? What are you drinking?

It would be my Mum, sister, grandmother & me. We’d be drinking anything by the Lockdown Liquor Co. Especially their Lychee Martinis which are dangerously delicious. 

 

  1. What’s your guilty pleasure?

Emotionally investing in less than high brown TV. I’ve been known to cry during Selling Sunset, and I’m now the biggest fan of Paris Fury who I think is completely wonderful. 

 

  1. What would your cross stitch pillow say?

 Definitely - ‘The best things in life are free, the second best are very expensive”
